<p><b>(536) Merapi</b> ist ein <a href="Asteroid" title="Asteroid">Asteroid</a> jenseits des äußeren <a href="Asteroideng%C3%BCrtel" title="Asteroidengürtel">Hauptgürtels</a>, der am 11. Mai 1904 vom US-amerikanischen Astronomen <a href="George_Henry_Peters" title="George Henry Peters">George Henry Peters</a> am <a href="United_States_Naval_Observatory" title="United States Naval Observatory">United States Naval Observatory</a> (USNO) in Washington, D.C. bei einer <a href="Scheinbare_Helligkeit" title="Scheinbare Helligkeit">Helligkeit</a> von 11,7 mag entdeckt wurde. Es war seine erste von drei Asteroidenentdeckungen.
</p><p>Der Asteroid ist benannt nach dem Vulkan <a href="Marapi" title="Marapi">Marapi</a> im mittleren Westen <a href="Sumatra" title="Sumatra">Sumatras</a>, dem Standort des USNO und anderer Expeditionen zur totalen <a href="Sonnenfinsternis" title="Sonnenfinsternis">Sonnenfinsternis</a> vom 18. Mai 1901.
